Usage Guide

CSS Grid describes 2D layout; miscounting tracks or mixing items/content alignment is easy. Tune columns, rows, gaps, equal or custom templates, and alignment, then copy container CSS — local preview for landings, galleries, and dashboard shells.

1. Build a grid

Output is container-level. Spans and named areas are hand-edits on top.

  1. Use equal repeat(n, 1fr) or a custom template string.
  2. Tune gaps and placeholder count.
  3. Set justify/align items and content, then copy .grid-container rules.

2. Grid vs flex

One axis → flex; both axes → grid. Nest freely.

  • Page shells with locked rows and columns.
  • 2D galleries that share baselines.
  • Two-column form grids; keep 1D bars on flex.

3. fr and responsive tracks

1fr shares free space after fixed tracks and gaps. Prefer minmax/auto-fit for reflow; commit real breakpoints and retest with long copy.

4. Alignment confusion

Use align-self for one-off cards instead of changing the container.

  • items align inside cells; content distributes track groups.
  • Default stretch; center icon cells.
  • Retest with real strings.

5. Pair tools

Grid is layout only — still check contrast.

  • Flexbox generator for 1D bars.
  • Gradient generator for backgrounds.
  • px-rem for spacing tokens.

6. Pitfalls

Extra items create implicit rows. Invalid templates blank the preview. Commit templates; local session is not source of truth.

FAQ

No. Session state lives only in your local browser, and generation and previewing run entirely on your machine. Do commit the final template, gaps, and breakpoints to your codebase — a generator session is not source control.

Equal or custom grid-template-columns/rows, column and row gaps, plus justify-items, align-items, justify-content, and align-content. The export focuses on container-level "template + gaps + alignment"; item spans and named areas are hand-edits on top of the generated code.

Yes. The output is a standard .grid-container rule you can paste straight into your stylesheet. Keep in mind the generator's preview viewport is not your real breakpoint — cover narrow screens with media queries of your own and retest wrapping and overflow with real, long copy.

Equal mode produces repeat(n, 1fr); custom mode accepts expressions like 1fr 2fr 1fr, auto 1fr auto, minmax(12rem, 1fr), or repeat(auto-fit, minmax(240px, 1fr)) to make tracks wrap on narrow screens. 1fr shares out the space left after fixed tracks and gaps. Two preview behaviors are not bugs: a malformed custom template leaves the preview blank (confirm the structure in equal mode first, then fine-tune), and when there are more items than tracks, the extras flow into implicit rows per the spec.

items controls how each child aligns inside its cell — it stretches to fill by default, and icon or badge columns can switch to center to avoid distortion; content controls how the whole set of tracks distributes across the container's leftover space. To top-align just one card, give that child an align-self instead of changing the container's align-items and dragging every cell along.

Use grid when rows and columns must be locked together: full-page shells (header, sidebar, main, footer), two-dimensional card galleries, forms with labels and controls aligned into columns. When only a single axis matters for distribution and wrapping — toolbars, tag rows, footer button groups — the flexbox generator fits better. The two nest happily: an outer grid for the page frame, an inner flex row for the toolbar.
