Usage Guide

The two lines of monospaced capitals under a passport photo are the Machine Readable Zone — what border systems actually read. This tool parses ICAO Doc 9303 formats TD3 (passport, 2×44) and TD1 (ID card, 3×30): auto-detect, extract name / document number / nationality / birthdate / expiry, and validate every 7-3-1 check digit including the composite. Typical uses: hotel front-desk data entry, integration fixtures for passport-capture features, back-office extraction.

1. The check-digit system (7-3-1)

Weights cycle 7,3,1; characters value 0-9 as-is, A-Z as 10-35, filler < as 0; the sum is taken mod 10. Document number, birthdate, expiry, and personal number each carry an individual check digit, and a final composite re-checks the concatenation of several fields together — it is the layer that catches field-transposition errors, the cleverest part of the scheme. The tool lists expected vs actual for every digit so the broken one is obvious.

2. Capability boundary (important)

This is a self-consistency parser: internally consistent MRZ with valid check digits says nothing about whether the document exists — a forged passport can carry perfectly legal check digits. No database is queried, nothing is stored, and document status is never assessed; authoritative verification belongs to border authorities.
