Usage Guide

llms.txt is your site’s README for AI search (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity): an H1 title, a one-line summary, and grouped link lists, served from the site root so generative engines know what to cite. This tool emits the llmstxt.org spec live — our own site llms.txt uses the same format and generation logic, turned inside-out into a tool.

1. How to structure it

  1. Title (H1): the site name, matching <title> — the anchor AI cites against.
  2. Summary (blockquote): one sentence of who it is for and why it is trustworthy — the first thing an AI reads before crawling deeper. Skip the marketing voice.
  3. Notes (optional): a free-form paragraph of context — stack, content volume, update cadence.
  4. Sections (H2) + link lines: - [name](url): one-line description — group by AI intent (docs / tools / pricing / latest posts), 5-15 links each; never dump the whole site into one list.

2. Three lessons from running it in production

  • Facts over adjectives in the summary: "173 privacy-first tools, data never leaves the browser" beats "the best developer toolkit" — AI systems favor verifiable specifics when quoting.
  • Give latest content its own section: models weight recency; our Latest Posts section gets cited far more than equivalent posts buried in categories.
  • llms.txt is an accelerator, not a switch: robots.txt decides whether AI crawlers may fetch; llms.txt tells them what is worth fetching. Pair it with our AI crawler robots decision tool.

3. Ship and verify

Save the output as llms.txt at your site root (reachable at https://your-domain/llms.txt). Advanced: also emit an llms-full.txt with complete FAQ content and reference it from llms.txt — exactly what this site ships. To verify, paste the URL into any web-connected AI assistant and ask what the site does; its answer should lean on your summary.
